With statistics about the huge number of people on the earth today who are trapped
in poverty so commonplace what differencedoes our knowledge that more than 50% of the planet live on less than $2 a day really make?
And even though the startlingly arresting finger clicking Make Poverty History Campaign of 2007 - ‘One child dies of a preventable disease very 3 seconds’ – made a huge impact at the time, we have to ask what ongoing and lasting effects have there been.
One very basic response at Linden has been to commit to and promote Fair Trade, because there are straightforward ways in which we are able to help some of those who are trapped in poverty.
With Fair Trade, producers in poor countries receive a decent return - a fair and stable price or wage for their products. In many cases they also get extra money - a premium - to invest in their business or community. So buying Fair Trade products is a way of doing something to bring about a better, more generous world. If we can help people out of poverty why wouldn't we?
So in the face of many people feeling unable to make a real and substantive difference to such a huge issue we say, there is a way to help people out of poverty: buy fair trade. Join in.
