Schools Work
Dan Evans tells us how he's trying to make Christian Union a little more relevant to life.

The photo shows Brains congratulating his brother on his successful entry into the world of knitting pattern modelling.
I've been working in Bishopston Comp every Monday lunch time for the past 6 months. The idea for the Christian Union was for it NOT to be just another bible study group or a group of Christians who meet and just play games, but I wanted the Christian pupils in the school to be activists making a difference in the life of the school and the community.
So initially, we focussed on Fair Trade. The Christian Union became the steering group for Fair Trade in the school as we aimed to make Bishopston a Fair Trade school. We have conducted assemblies on the issues of Fair Trade, organised a Fair Trade Tea Party serving free fairtrade cakes, teas, coffees, and a chocolate fountain! The young people within the Christian Union also sell Fair Trade chocolate from a stall once a month called 'Fair Trade Fridays.' These have been a great success having now sold over 1500 bars of Fair Trade chocolate!
We have now shifted our attention to raising awareness to the world Aids problem. I have given the CU £10, and asked them to try and think of ways in which they can multiply that £10 to raise money and awareness for the HOPE HIV charity. |
